Survey of pathogens spread by mosquitoes and ticks, that are the cause of
past, present, or emerging vector-borne diseases in the Southeastern United
States. Topics include cellular biology, pathogenesis, immunology, and health
consequences of vector-borne diseases on human and non-human animal
hosts. The laboratory aspect is a course-based undergraduate research
experience (CURE) in which students will (i) survey local mosquito
populations to determine competence of local mosquitoes for vector-borne
pathogens, (ii) correlate mosquito data with weather measurements, and (iii)
characterize mosquitoes using molecular techniques. P-BIO 150, 150L, 160,
and BIO 160L.
